The Lesson

The people sit. A reading from the book of Acts chapter 17 beginning with verse 22: (22-

34)

[22] Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I

see that in every way you are very religious. [23] For as I walked around and looked

carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an

unknown god. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to

you.

[24] "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and

earth and does not live in temples built by hands. [25] And he is not served by human

hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and

everything else. [26] From one man he made every nation of men, that they should

inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places

where they should live. [27] God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach

out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. [28] 'For in him we

live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his

offspring.'

[29] "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being

is like gold or silver or stone--an image made by man's design and skill. [30] In the past

God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.

[31] For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has

appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."

[32] When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but

others said, "We want to hear you again on this subject." [33] At that, Paul left the

Council. [34] A few men became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was

Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of

others.

The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Standing, the following hymn is sung.

Remaining standing, the Gospel is read, first saying

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John (15: 1- 8 New Living

Translation).

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

[1] "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. [2] He cuts off every branch that

doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce

even more. [3] You have already been pruned for greater fruitfulness by the message I

have given you. [4] Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce

fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful apart from me.

[5] "Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them,

will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. [6] Anyone who parts

from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered

into a pile to be burned. [7] But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you,

you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted! [8] My true disciples produce

much fruit. This brings great glory to my Father.

The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon Bishop Tommy Johnston

The Prayers (The people sit or kneel.)

Confession of Sin

The celebrant says,

Hear the words of challenge and comfort:

All say together:

Almighty God, Creator of all, you marvelously made us in your image; but we have

corrupted ourselves and damaged your likeness by rejecting your love and hurting

our neighbors. We have done wrong and neglected to do right. We are sincerely

sorry and heartily repent of our sins. Cleanse us and forgive us by the sacrifice of

your Son; remake us and lead us by your Spirit, the Comforter. We ask this

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon

All say together,

Thank you, Father, for forgiveness. We come to your table as your children, not

presuming but assured, not trusting ourselves but your Word. We hunger and

thirst for righteousness, and ask for our hearts to be satisfied with the body and

blood of your Son, Jesus Christ the righteous. Amen.

The Peace

All stand. The Celebrant says to the people

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And also with you.

Then the people may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

Offertory:

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.

All are seated while the Table is prepared for Holy Communion and an anthem is sung.

Anthem

The Holy Communion

The Great Thanksgiving

All stand. The Celebrant says

Celebrant Is the Father with us?

People He is.

Celebrant Is Christ among us?

People He is.

Celebrant Is the Spirit here?

People He is.

Celebrant This is our God:

People Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Celebrant We are his people:

People We are redeemed.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts:

People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God:

People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds

It is right and our delight to give you thanks and praise, Holy Father, living God, supreme

over the world, Creator, Provider, Saviour and Giver. From a wandering nomad you

created your family; for a burdened people you raised up a leader; for a confused nation

you chose a king; for a rebellious crowd you sent your prophets. In these last days you

have sent us your Son, your perfect image, bringing your kingdom, revealing your will,

dying, rising, reigning, remaking your people for yourself. Through him you have

poured out your Holy Spirit, filling us with light and life. Therefore with angels,

archangels, and all in heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, forever praising

you and saying:

(Celebrant and People say together)

Holy, holy, holy Lord,

God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full of your glory,

Hosanna in the highest

(The Celebrant continues)

Almighty God, Owner of all things, we thank you for giving up your only Son to die on

the cross for us who owe you everything. Pour your refreshing Spirit on us as we

remember him in the way he commanded. On the same night that he was betrayed he

took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, “Take,

eat”; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

People Amen. His body was broken for us.

(Celebrant continues)

In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them

saying, “Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for

you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this as often as you drink it, in

remembrance of me.”

People Amen. We are brothers and sisters through his blood. We have died

together. We will rise together. We will live together.

Celebrant

Therefore, heavenly Father, hear us as we celebrate this covenant with joy, and await the

coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He died in our place, making a full atonement for the

sins of the whole world, the perfect sacrifice, once and for all. You accepted his offering

by raising him from death, and granting him great honor at your right hand on high.

People Amen. Jesus is Lord.

Celebrant This is the feast of victory.

People The Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Hallelujah!

As Jesus taught us, we now pray, (In unison)

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Celebrant I am because we are:

People We are because he is.

Celebrant We are one body:

People We share one bread.

Celebrant Draw near with faith:

People Christ is the host and we are his guests.

The Bread and the Cup are now given to the communicants. You may eat the bread and

drink from the cup or you may take the bread and dip it into the cup of wine.

All Baptized Christians are welcome to receive communion.

Songs During Communion

Be Unto Your Name

By Lynn DeShazo and Gary Sadler

We are a moment, You are forever,

Lord of the ages, God before time;

We are a vapor, You are eternal,

Love everlasting, reigning on high.

Holy, holy, Lord God Almighty,

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain;

Highest praises honor and glory

Be unto Your name,

Be unto Your name.

We are the broken, You are the healer,

Jesus, Redeemer, mighty to save;

You are the love song we’ll sing forever,

Bowing before You, blessing Your name.

Take My Life and Let It Be

By Henri Malan and Frances Havergal

Take my life and let it be consecrated, Lord, to thee.

Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy love,

At the impulse of thy love.

Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for thee.

Take my voice and let me sing always, only for my King,

Always, only for my King.

Take my love my God I put at thy feet it’s treasure store.

Take my self and I will be ever, only, all for thee,

Ever, only, all for thee.

Think About His Love

By Walt Harrah

Think about His love, think about His goodness,

Think about His grace that’s brought us through.

For as high as the heavens above

So great is the measure of our Father’s love.

Great is the measure of our Father’s love.

How could I forget His love?

How could I forget His mercy?

He satisfies, He satisfies,

He satisfies my desires.

Even when I’ve strayed away

His love has sought me out and found me.

He satisfies, He satisfies,

He satisfies my desires.

I Could Sing of Your Love Forever

By: Martin Smith

Over the mountains and the sea

Your river runs with love for me.

And I will open up my heart

And let the healer set me free.

I’m happy to be in the truth,

And I will daily lift my hands

For I will always sing

Of when Your love came down.

I could sing of Your love forever,

I could sing of Your love forever.

I could sing of Your love forever,

I could sing of Your love forever.

May Christ Be Exalted In Me

By Don Harris and Gary Sadler

May Christ be exalted in me,

May Christ be exalted in me;

I will live to bring Him glory and honor,

From now to eternity,

O, may Christ be exalted in me.

Be exalted, O Lord,

Be exalted, O Lord,

Now and forever be glory and honor,

Power and wisdom and might.
